It’s funny how something can sit directly underneath your nose for years until you notice it. One of the small delights of my most recent wander during the Jordaan was finally finding the delightful tiny hidden houses in Amsterdam. I include the story behind these adorable hidden miniature houses and the address of the hidden houses in Amsterdam!
The story behind the tiny hidden houses in Amsterdam
One of the most main streets that runs through de Jordaan, one of Amsterdam’s most atmospheric neighborhoods, is Westerstraat. Although tourists often flock to this neighborhood for the lovely markets, the apple pie at Winkel43, and the beautiful canals, you’ll find the Jordaan has its own culture and charm, including cafes where you can sing along to Dutch favorites (or just have a beer while watching!)
I’ve walked down Westerstraat countless times as I’ve done my errands and even stepped into the nearby Dobey Amsterdam pet store for cat food, however today was the first time that I discovered the tiny hidden houses in the Jordaan. These seven miniature adorable classic Dutch houses are hidden within the crack next to the number for 54.
They were placed here by the advertising agency who inhabits the building as a joke as the courtyard that sits behind the building was closed down to make room for more houses. Numbers 56-68 used to be through the door, however today, you’ll have to admire the miniature versions styled after nearby houses within this four-inch crack…
It’s a small delight, but sometimes life is about taking in those little moments, whether it’s stopping to pet a friendly cat, exploring a hidden courtyard, or looking for little tiny houses within a wall. Even as someone who has spent a lot of time on this street, it took me quite a while to find the tiny houses.
Address of the tiny houses in Amsterdam: Westerstraat 54
You’ll want to look left of the crack and the sign signaling 54. I like to imagine little tiny Amsterdammers live inside and I hope that you enjoyed this small delight. You’ll find more insider tips for exploring Amsterdam here.
